Toulouse-Lautrec's circle at a table in the Moulin Rouge: the writer Édouard Dujardin, the dancer La Macarona, the photographer Paul Sescau and the wine merchant Maurice Guibert, with Jane Avril's red-orange hair seen from behind. The dancer La Goulue fixes her hair in the background, the artist himself walks past in profile beside his tall cousin Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran, and at the right the English dancer May Milton looms into the frame with her face lit an acid green. Painted between 1892 and 1895, it is a group portrait of the cabaret that had opened in 1889 and where Lautrec kept a reserved table. The strange lighting, the cropped figures and the diagonal rail come from his study of Degas and Japanese prints. The painting is in the Art Institute of Chicago's Helen Birch Bartlett Memorial Collection, where it was first shown in 1930.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
