Jane Avril kicks up one leg in a frilled skirt on the stage of the Jardin de Paris, her orange and yellow costume framed by the neck of a double bass that rises from the orchestra pit in the foreground, gripped by an unseen musician's hand. Avril, a lifelong friend of Toulouse-Lautrec, commissioned the poster in 1893 to advertise her show at the Champs-Élysées dance garden. The design is built on a radically tilted viewpoint, severe cropping and sinuous lines, and the kick of her leg, one of her signature moves, is echoed by the vertical thrust of the instrument. Lautrec drew a separate lithographic stone for each of the five colours, among them inky black, acid orange, yellow and green. The sheet is well over a metre high. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired this impression in 1932 with the Harris Brisbane Dick Fund.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
