The singer Aristide Bruant in his wide-brimmed black hat, dark cape and long red scarf, set against a plain ground with his name lettered above. Bruant ran his own cabaret in Montmartre, singing songs of the Paris underworld in the voice of the street, and when he began to appear at the smarter café-concerts on the Champs-Élysées he commissioned Toulouse-Lautrec to sell that rough persona to a bourgeois audience. The poster of 1893 reduces him to a few flat shapes, the hat, the cape and the scarf, and the sparse design made both performer and artist famous. Printed in four colours by lithography, it is more than a metre high. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquired this impression in 1932 with the Harris Brisbane Dick Fund.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
