The dancer Jane Avril, in black, sits in the audience of the Divan Japonais beside the writer Édouard Dujardin, while on the stage at the upper left the singer Yvette Guilbert is cut off at the neck by the edge of the sheet, recognisable only by her long black gloves. Toulouse-Lautrec designed the poster in 1892–93 to advertise the café-concert, one of the Montmartre nightspots he frequented, and had it printed in four colours by lithography. The flat silhouettes, the diagonal of the balcony rail and the daring crop come straight from Japanese prints, which gave the venue its name. Avril was a close friend and appears in many of his prints. This impression belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which received it in the bequest of Clifford A. Furst in 1958.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
