Turner's second oil of the fire that gutted the Houses of Parliament on 16 October 1834, exhibited at the British Institution in February 1835. Here the viewpoint is upstream, from the south bank beside Westminster Bridge, so the bridge looms at the right, its arches enlarged and distorted by the glare, while across the water the House of Commons in St Stephen's Hall and the towers of Westminster Abbey are lit gold by the fire. Spectators pack the foreground and the flames reflect dull red in the Thames. Turner witnessed the fire himself and sketched it from the riverbank and a hired boat; parts of the composition may also draw on The Times's report the next morning. It is the same size as the Cleveland canvas and entered the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1928 with the John Howard McFadden Collection.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
