What size art goes above a sofa?
For an 84 in (213 cm) sofa, choose art 56–63 in (142–160 cm) wide (two-thirds to three-quarters of it) and hang it with 6–10 in (15–25 cm) of wall between the sofa and the frame. From our sizes that is a row of three of 18 × 24 in portraits, 3 in (7.5 cm) apart: 60 in (152 cm) across.
Hanger drop: measure from the top of the frame down to the hanger (on a sawtooth, to the middle of the teeth).

Art width = ⅔ to ¾ of the sofa. Options use our print sizes with 3 in (7.5 cm) gaps; prices are unframed, with 10% off three or more.

The rules and the formula
- Art above furniture should be two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width.
- Leave 6–10 in (15–25 cm) of wall between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame.
- Space frames 3 in (7.5 cm) apart in a row or set, and 2–3 in (5–7.5 cm) apart in a gallery wall.
- Nail height = centre height + half the frame height − the hanger drop (the distance from the top of the frame to its hanger).
Worked examples
- A 72 in (183 cm) sofa wants 48–54 in (122–137 cm) of art. A pair of 24 × 36 in portraits 3 in (7.5 cm) apart spans 51 in (130 cm), 71% of it, hung with its bottom edge 42 in (107 cm) from the floor. Or a pair of 24 × 18 in landscapes, 51 in (130 cm).
- An 84 in (213 cm) sofa wants 56–63 in (142–160 cm) of art. A row of three of 18 × 24 in portraits 3 in (7.5 cm) apart spans 60 in (152 cm), 71% of it, hung with its bottom edge 42 in (107 cm) from the floor. Or a row of three of 18 × 12 in landscapes, 60 in (152 cm).
- A 96 in (244 cm) sofa wants 64–72 in (163–183 cm) of art. A pair of 32 × 24 in landscapes 3 in (7.5 cm) apart spans 67 in (170 cm), 70% of it, hung with its bottom edge 42 in (107 cm) from the floor. Or a row of four of 16 × 24 in portraits (a touch over the band), 73 in (185 cm).

How wide should art be above a sofa?
Two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width. For an 84 in (213 cm) sofa that is 56–63 in (142–160 cm), which in practice means three prints rather than one.
How high above the sofa should art hang?
Leave 6–10 in (15–25 cm) of wall between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. Above a sofa this gap matters more than the 57 in (145 cm) centre rule, because the two must read as one arrangement.
One big print or a set of three above a sofa?
One wide landscape works if it reaches two-thirds of the sofa's width. Our widest single print is 36 in (91 cm), so most sofas over 56 in (142 cm) take a pair or a row of three.
Landscape or portrait above a sofa?
Landscape for a single piece, since the sofa is wide and low. Portraits work above a sofa as a row of two or three, where the row itself becomes the landscape.
