Picture hanging height calculator: where does the nail go?

Hang art so its centre sits 57 in (145 cm) from the floor, the height galleries use. The nail goes at the centre height plus half the frame's height, minus the hanger drop (the distance from the top of the frame down to its hanger).

The 57 in (145 cm) rule puts the middle of the picture at the average adult's eye level. Some designers use 60 in (152 cm), which suits rooms with ceilings over 9 ft. Both are measured to the CENTRE of the picture, not its top: most disagreement online comes from mixing the two.

Hanger drop: measure from the top of the frame down to the hanger (on a sawtooth, to the middle of the teeth).

Put the nail 68 in from the floor. The 16 × 24 in frame's centre then sits at 57 in.

The rules and the formula

  • Nail height = centre height + half the frame height − the hanger drop (the distance from the top of the frame to its hanger).
  • On a bare wall, hang art so its centre sits 57 in (145 cm) from the floor; 60 in (152 cm) with ceilings over 9 ft.
  • Over furniture, measure from the furniture instead: nail = furniture height + gap + frame height − hanger drop, with a gap of 6–10 in (15–25 cm).
  • Two hangers? Use the same height for both nails, spaced as far apart as the hangers are.

Worked examples

  • A 16 × 24 in frame with a 1 in (2.5 cm) drop: 57 in (145 cm) + 12 in (30 cm) − 1 in (2.5 cm) = nail at 68 in (173 cm).
  • A 24 × 36 in frame with a 1½ in (4 cm) drop at a 60 in (152 cm) centre: 60 in (152 cm) + 18 in (46 cm) − 1½ in (4 cm) = nail at 76½ in (194 cm).
  • A 18 × 12 in landscape above a 30 in (76 cm) console with an 8 in (20 cm) gap and a 1 in (2.5 cm) drop: 30 in (76 cm) + 8 in (20 cm) + 12 in (30 cm) − 1 in (2.5 cm) = nail at 49 in (124 cm).

Questions

How high should pictures be hung?

With the centre of the picture 57 in (145 cm) from the floor, 60 in (152 cm) with tall ceilings. Above furniture, leave 6–10 in (15–25 cm) of wall instead.

Is the 57 inch rule to the top or the centre?

To the centre. A rule that puts the top at 57 inches hangs everything too low.

What is the hanger drop?

The distance from the top of the frame down to the point that will rest on the nail: the middle of a sawtooth hanger, or a pulled-taut wire. Our frames have sawtooth hangers on the back.

Should all pictures in a room hang at the same height?

Hang them on the same centre line, not the same top line: different sizes then look aligned.
