About George Bellows
George Bellows was born in Columbus, Ohio, in August 1882, left university where he had been a baseball star, and arrived in New York in 1904 to study under Robert Henri. Within five years his paintings of prizefights at Sharkey's saloon, boys swimming in the East River, and the excavation for Pennsylvania Station had made him the most talked-about young painter in America, the youngest ever elected to the National Academy. He painted the city's snow, docks and crowds with a loaded brush and a reporter's eye, summered in Maine and Woodstock, became a master lithographer, and in 1924 painted the Dempsey–Firpo fight. He died in New York in January 1925 of a ruptured appendix, aged forty-two. His boxing pictures and winter harbours print as bold, dark-and-bright images for a study, bar or gym.
