Editor’s picks
The 9 we’d start with, and who each one suits.

A heart-faced mother owl standing over two downy chicks says nursery more gently than anything else here, hung above the changing table.

Forty colourful butterflies and moths on one chart give a baby something to gaze at now and a toddler something to point at later.

Two small yellow warblers on a slim green stem keep the wall airy and soft, a quiet fit for a narrow spot beside the cot.

Pale green leaves and pink moths with their caterpillars suit a sage or cream nursery and grow into a first lesson on metamorphosis.

A pair of ducks on a green bank, set small on cream, sits nicely beside bath-time books and makes a sweet baby shower gift.

Rows of white and lemon-yellow butterflies bring sunshine to a gender-neutral nursery painted cream, buttery yellow or soft grey.

Two green hummingbirds sipping from a hanging trumpet flower make a delicate companion piece over a rocking chair or feeding corner.

Painted ladies and tortoiseshells around a purple thistle bring a garden feel to a nursery with floral bedding or curtains.

Soft cream and sepia owl-butterflies, each wing marked with a gentle eye spot, suit a calm neutral nursery in oatmeal, taupe or warm white.

Gentle plates for a child's room
Hand-coloured animal plates from the nineteenth century make calm, lasting nursery art: Audubon's birds, the smaller Quadrupeds such as hares and squirrels, butterflies from Seitz, and the quiet woodblocks of Koson. The colours are soft because they were hand-tinted, and the animals are drawn with the patience of naturalists rather than the exaggeration of cartoons.
Sizing for a nursery
Three 12×18 prints in a row above a changing table, or two 16×24 upright plates either side of a window, are the arrangements that work. Specimen editions, with the animal's name and Latin name beneath, grow with the child.
