About Frederic Remington

Frederic Remington was born in Canton, New York, in October 1861, studied briefly at Yale, and after a failed sheep ranch in Kansas and a saloon in Kansas City turned to drawing the West he had seen for Harper's Weekly and Outing. By 1890 he was the most popular illustrator in America, the inventor of the cowboy, cavalryman and Indian scout of the public imagination, and A Dash for the Timber of 1889 had made him a painter. He covered the Spanish–American War in Cuba, turned to bronze sculpture with The Bronco Buster in 1895, and in his last years painted the nocturnes, moonlit riders and campfires in blue and green, that are now his most admired work. He died at Ridgefield, Connecticut, in December 1909, after an appendectomy, aged forty-eight. His riders and night scenes print as dramatic, atmospheric pictures for a study, den or cabin.
