Eleonora of Toledo, Duchess of Florence, sits upright against a deep ultramarine sky over a hazy landscape, one hand on the shoulder of her small son Giovanni, who stands beside her in blue satin. Her gown, a white and gold brocaded silk with a bold black arabesque and pomegranate pattern, is rendered thread by thread, with a net of pearls over her hair, pearl necklaces and a gold girdle. Eleonora, the daughter of the Spanish viceroy of Naples, married Cosimo I de' Medici in 1539 and became Bronzino's leading patron with her husband. Bronzino painted the portrait in Florence in about 1545, as court painter. It is the first known state-commissioned portrait to include the ruler's heir, and the child and the pomegranate, an emblem of fertility, stress her role in securing the dynasty, while the costly fabric advertised the Florentine silk industry Cosimo promoted. Giovanni, born in 1543, became a cardinal and died young in 1562. The portrait hangs in the Uffizi, Florence.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
