The city of Toledo stretches along a hilltop under a stormy sky of deep blue, black and white, with the cathedral tower and the Alcázar picked out in grey light, the Tagus gorge and the Alcántara bridge below, and green hills in the foreground. It is one of only two landscapes by El Greco to survive, with the later View and Plan of Toledo in the El Greco Museum there, and landscape painting was rare in Spain at the time. The Metropolitan Museum dates it to about 1599–1600; some earlier writers placed it later in his career. It is not a faithful topographical record: El Greco rearranged the position of the city's landmarks to suit his composition. He signed it in Greek capitals, as he signed all his work, with his real name, Domenikos Theotokopoulos. The painting came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 1929 with the bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
