Cardinal Fernando Niño de Guevara sits in a high-backed chair in a crimson silk mozzetta and cape over a lace rochet, his left hand gripping the arm of the chair, and looks sideways through round horn-rimmed spectacles; a paper lies on the patterned floor at his feet, and the wall behind is divided between a wooden door and gilded leather. Guevara, made a cardinal in 1596, became Inquisitor General of Spain in 1599, and the portrait was probably painted in the spring of 1600 during a visit of several weeks to Toledo. It may have been commissioned by his nephew Pedro Laso de la Vega, Count of los Arcos, a patron and friend of El Greco. The Metropolitan Museum dates it to about 1600; it came to the museum in 1929 with the H. O. Havemeyer bequest and hangs in New York.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 16×24. Prints at 12×18, 16×24 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
