The whole village of Ornans, Courbet's birthplace in the Jura, stands around an open grave in the new cemetery below the limestone cliffs: the curé reading, the beadles in red, the pall-bearers, the gravedigger kneeling, the mayor, the artist's own father and sisters, and a dog. Courbet painted it in 1849 and 1850, in the back room of a house in Ornans, with the villagers posing in turn, and showed it at the Salon of 1850–51, where its size, the scale reserved for history painting, and its unidealised provincial faces caused an outcry. He called it, in a letter, the burial of Romanticism. It is nearly seven metres wide and was given to the state by his sister Juliette in 1881; it hangs in the Musée d'Orsay, where it was restored in public in 2025.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A long procession of black-clad villagers, red-robed beadles and white surplices under grey cliffs, a very wide painting for a hallway, dining room or living room at 36×24 in black. Stone, deep green or charcoal walls suit the sombre palette; pair it with The Painter's Studio.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
