A garland of grapes, lemons, a pomegranate, plums, cherries and blackberries, threaded with roses and a branch of chestnuts, hangs from a ring in front of a stone niche, and beetles, butterflies and snails are busy all over it. Jan Davidsz de Heem was born in Utrecht and moved to Antwerp in 1626, where he absorbed the lush colour of Flemish still life and joined it to a Dutch precision that renders every bloom on the skin of a plum. The result is both a decorative object, designed to hang over a door or mantel, and a piece of close natural observation. The Rijksmuseum dates it to about 1660 to 1670, when de Heem was the most influential still-life painter in the Low Countries and his festoons were being copied by pupils on both sides of the border. It is SK-A-138 in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
