Seen from above, a frozen river outside a village teems with some two hundred figures: skaters, kolf players, strollers in their best clothes, a horse-drawn sledge, fishermen trying to free a boat from the ice, and in the left foreground crows and a dog at the carcass of a horse that froze to death. Avercamp painted it on an oak panel around 1608, after the savage winter of 1607 to 1608, and it is among the earliest works by the first Dutch painter to specialise in winter. The debt to Pieter Bruegel is plain, down to the wooden bird trap, and Avercamp signed the panel as graffiti scrawled on the wall of a wooden shed at the right. Hendrick Avercamp, who was deaf and mute, worked in Kampen for most of his life. The Rijksmuseum bought the painting in 1897 with the support of the Vereniging Rembrandt.
