Striped tulips, a white peony, morning glories, pink roses, wheat ears and pea pods push out of a bulbous glass vase on a stone ledge, with blackberries dropped beside it. A caterpillar clings under the peony, a butterfly flies toward it, a bee sits on an anemone, and a snail, a salamander and a spider gather on the ledge; the panes of a window are reflected in the belly of the vase. De Heem signed it on the front of the ledge, J.D. De Heem f., and it dates from about 1660, when he was working between Antwerp and Utrecht as the leading still-life painter of the day. The flowers bloom at different seasons and were assembled from separate studies, a practice the Dutch and Flemish understood as a way of celebrating the whole of creation at once. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, one of the richest flower pieces in America.
