Dürer shows himself head-on against a black ground, his long brown curls falling to his shoulders, his right hand raised to the fur collar of a brown coat in a gesture close to blessing. A strictly frontal pose was then usual only for images of Christ, and the painting deliberately echoes them. To the left are his monogram and the date 1500; to the right a Latin inscription reads, in translation, I, Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg, portrayed myself in everlasting colours at the age of twenty-eight. He completed it early in 1500, just before his twenty-ninth birthday; it is the last of his three painted self-portraits, after those of 1493 and 1498. Twenty-eight marked, in the medieval scheme of life's stages, the step from youth to maturity, and the year 1500 gave the A.D. of his monogram the added sense of Anno Domini. The panel probably went to the Nuremberg city council and was on view there until 1805, when it was sold to the Bavarian royal collection. It hangs in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
