Heavy snow weighs down a row of leaning pines with red-brown trunks, and travellers in round hats and straw rain capes trudge through the drifts between them, one wrapped in a red cloak. At the left a rider on a brown horse and two walkers pass snow-covered roofs, and a small red bridge crosses a dark blue stream, under a grey sky with a thin band of orange at the horizon. This is print fifteen of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Itahana was the fourteenth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
