Red-crowned cranes stand and feed in the foreground while others fly across the sky, set against rolling green hills and soft bands of cloud. Behind them Mount Fuji rises in a deep blue, graded cone with a white summit. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). Umezawa lay in Sagami province, and cranes, emblems of long life, were a favoured subject alongside the mountain. The smooth gradation of blue on the mountain is one of the finest uses of bokashi in the series; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
