Travellers stop at a shop on a steep mountain road, where a hanging sign advertises its speciality, Oroku combs, and sellers sit on the matted floor among the goods. In front, a porter with a towel round his shoulders sets down a box as travellers in green and white hats walk past. Stone-weighted roofs sit below the road, and misty grey mountains fill the valley at the left. This is print thirty-five of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi), c. 1835–36. Keisai Eisen, who designed it, began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige completed it. Narai was the thirty-fourth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Misty grey mountains, warm wood tones and figures in green and indigo, for a hallway, study or kitchen at 24×16 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's Narumi: Famous Arimatsu Tie-dyed Cloth for two shops selling a station's local speciality.
