Christ sits at the centre of a long table in a coffered hall, the window behind him framing his head, while the twelve apostles recoil in four groups of three at his words that one of them will betray him. Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, commissioned the mural for the refectory of the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and Leonardo worked on it from about 1495 to 1498. Rather than true fresco he used tempera and oil on a dry ground so that he could work slowly and revise, and the paint began to flake within his lifetime. The wall has since survived failed restorations, Napoleonic troops quartered in the room, and an Allied bomb that struck the refectory in August 1943, when sandbagging protected it. A twenty-one-year restoration led by Pinin Brambilla Barcilon ended in 1999, removing centuries of overpaint; much of what remains is fragile and some areas were left in neutral tones. It is still on the end wall of the refectory in Milan.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
