A young woman in a froth of pink silk swings high above a garden while a young man hidden in the bushes at the left gazes up her skirts and an older man behind her works the ropes; she kicks off a slipper toward a statue of Cupid, who holds a finger to his lips. The picture was commissioned around 1767 by a courtier, probably the Baron de Saint-Julien, who asked first Doyen and then Fragonard to paint his mistress on a swing pushed by a bishop, with himself placed where he could see her legs. Fragonard made the bishop an elderly husband and painted the foliage in feathery strokes of green and gold. It is the defining image of the Rococo, and it has hung in the Wallace Collection in London since the bequest of 1897.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
