A flat-bottomed ferry poled by a boatman carries a mixed load of travellers across a broad blue river: a woman in a bright headscarf, a man under a wide straw hat, others crouched among their bags. On the far bank a packhorse waits at the landing beside thatched houses and tall trees, and a white Mount Fuji rises on the right against a red glow at the horizon. The print is number three in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Kawasaki was the second station on the road, and here travellers crossed the Tama River, known locally as the Rokugō, by ferry rather than by bridge; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
