Travellers of all kinds cross a plank bridge over a stream: a woman with a basket on her head, a man carrying buckets on a pole, a pilgrim with a box on his back and others with loads, while below the bridge a man works in the water. A stone marker stands by the path, and above dark bands of cloud Mount Fuji rises white and blue. The print is one of the ten additional views Hokusai added to his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō), and like the others it is printed with black outlines. Nakahara was a village in Sagami province, south-west of Edo. Hokusai fills the foreground with the bustle of ordinary country life; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Soft cream fields and blue water with a white Fuji above dark clouds, for a hallway, study or home office at 36×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Fuji from the Katakura Tea Fields in Suruga for two scenes of country life.
