Travellers pass a tall wooden post inscribed with the boundary between two provinces, beside a row of thatched shops with lettered signs. A man seated in a doorway lights his pipe from a passer-by's, a traveller in a yellow hat walks toward us and a porter carries two straw bales on a pole. A large tree stands at the right above fields running out to a blue mountain. This is print sixty of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Imasu was the fifty-ninth station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Golden thatch, a red-brown road and a deep blue sky with dark green trees, for a hallway, entrance or study at 24×16 in black. It pairs with Fukushima: The Barrier Gate for two crossing points on the road.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Imasu: The Provincial Boundary in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Diet Library.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 18×12 and 24×16 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Imasu: The Provincial Boundary painted, and in what medium?
Imasu: The Provincial Boundary dates from c. 1835–38 and was made in woodblock print; ink and colour on paper; the original measures approx. 23 × 35 cm (horizontal ōban).
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×16 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 18×12 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Imasu: The Provincial Boundary we'd choose 24×16. It is a landscape print, wider than it is tall, at the painting's own proportions.
