A huge pine rises from a grassy bank in the middle of the road, its branches spreading across a cream sky, with a long covered pole leaning against the trunk. At the left two porters in green walk off with boxes on frames strapped to their backs, past thatched houses, and at the right an old woman sits beside a basket below yellow-green slopes. This is print sixty-two of The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaidō, published by Hōeidō and later Kinjudō, c. 1835–38. Keisai Eisen began the series and Utagawa Hiroshige, who designed this sheet, completed it. Samegai was the sixty-first station on the Nakasendō, the inland road from Edo to Kyoto; the English title is descriptive, and impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
