Under a soft pink sky, two travellers sit eating on the bench of a thatched teahouse while a woman with a baby on her back serves them, and a man walks off along the road at the left. A long sign advertises the shop's speciality, tororo-jiru, a soup of grated yam, and a plum tree in early white blossom stands beside the eaves. The print is number twenty-one in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Mariko, the twentieth station, was a small village in the hills west of Fuchū, and its yam soup was well known to travellers on the road; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
