Two teams of men in short coats race across the ground at full stretch, hauling horses on long ropes toward the great red torii of Atsuta Shrine at the right. Bonfires burn by the houses at the upper left, where onlookers watch from the doorways, and the whole scene is printed in a dusky grey that suggests evening. The print is number forty-two in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Miya, the forty-first station, grew up around Atsuta Shrine, a major Shinto shrine, and was also the port where travellers took the boat across the bay to Kuwana; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
