Outside the post-station office, porters and packhorses are being changed: men stripped to loincloths wipe away sweat and lift loads onto fresh horses, while officials in dark robes on the raised floor at the right check the paperwork. Bales and boxes lie in the yard, and a horse drinks from a bucket under the trees at the top of the scene. The print is number twenty-three in the Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, published by Hōeidō (Takenouchi Magohachi) in 1833–34. Each station on the road kept porters and horses to carry baggage on to the next town, and this is the relay the title describes at Fujieda, the twenty-second station; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
