A massive cedar trunk rises through the centre of the sheet, and three travellers join hands to try to reach around it, while others rest nearby with their loads. Behind the tree, Mount Fuji rises in a dark blue cone wreathed in curling white clouds. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). The Mishima pass crossed the mountains of Kai province on the road toward Fuji. The giant tree, cut off by the top of the sheet, is a bold vertical set right in front of the mountain; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
