One Hundred Famous Views of Edo

A line of samurai retainers in yellow hats marches toward us along a road beside the moat, led by a man in a green coat with a tall spear topped by a white tuft. To the left, the still blue water of the Tameike pond stretches below a stone wall and green banks under a pink sky. The print is number eighty-five in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published by Uoya Eikichi, with a censor's seal of the ninth month of 1857. Kinokuni Hill at Akasaka ran past a residence of the lords of Kii province, which gave the slope its name. The marching figures are drawn large and close, filling the right side of the sheet; impressions vary in colour and condition.

This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.

Where it works

Moat blue and soft green with a file of figures in purple and green, for a hallway, study or home office at 16×24 in natural wood. It pairs with The Paulownia Garden at Akasaka, which looks over the same pond.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
Very slightly cropped. This full-bleed edition prints the painting edge to edge, so a thin sliver, a few percent at most, is trimmed from two opposite edges to fit the print size. We only offer it on paintings whose proportions already come that close to the sheet. For the whole painting, uncropped, choose the gallery edition.
Is Kinokuni Hill and Distant View of Akasaka and the Tameike Pond in the public domain?
Yes. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by National Diet Library.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18 and 16×24 inches; every size is also offered framed in black or natural wood, with plexiglass and no mat. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was Kinokuni Hill and Distant View of Akasaka and the Tameike Pond painted, and in what medium?
Kinokuni Hill and Distant View of Akasaka and the Tameike Pond dates from 1857 and was made in woodblock print; ink and color on paper; the original measures approx. 36 × 24 cm (ōban).
What size works above a sofa or bed?
Across a three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 16×24 is the size that reads as one statement piece; 12×18 suits a narrower wall or a pair. For Kinokuni Hill and Distant View of Akasaka and the Tameike Pond we'd choose 16×24.
