Pilgrims in white with straw hats and staffs climb the steep, reddish slopes near the summit of Mount Fuji, some using a ladder, while others rest crowded together in a rock shelter at the top right. Clouds drift below them and the sky opens wide at the left. The print is one of the ten additional views Hokusai added to his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō), and like the others it is printed with black outlines. Climbing Fuji was a religious pilgrimage, and here, unusually for the series, we stand on the mountain itself rather than looking at it from afar. The warm reds and browns of the volcanic rock set it apart from the blue-dominated views; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
