From a high dune the eye travels across long strips of linen laid out to bleach in the sun, over a band of shadowed country, to the skyline of Haarlem with the great tower of St Bavo's rising above the town, while clouds take up two thirds of the canvas. In the 1670s Ruisdael painted at least fifteen of these panoramas, which inventories of the day called Haarlempjes, working from drawings made in the dunes west of the city and composing in the studio; the skyline is accurate, the dune is not a real spot. Linen bleaching was one of Haarlem's chief industries, and the cloth lay in the fields for eight days before being steeped, washed and dried. This version, barely sixty centimetres across, is in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, and its alternation of sunlit and shadowed ground is the reason it reads as much larger than it is.

This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Is this the whole painting, or a crop?
The whole work, uncropped. The image fills the print at the painting's own proportions; nothing is trimmed to fit a frame.
Is View of Haarlem with Bleaching Grounds in the public domain?
Yes. Jacob van Ruisdael (1628–1682) died more than 70 years ago and the work was published before 1929, so the painting itself is public domain. This print is a reproduction made from a high-resolution scan of the original, which is held by Mauritshuis.
What is it printed on?
Heavyweight matte fine-art paper with pigment inks, made to order in 12×18, 16×24 and 24×36 inches; the two larger sizes are also offered framed. Colours are matched to the scan, not brightened.
When was View of Haarlem with Bleaching Grounds painted, and in what medium?
View of Haarlem with Bleaching Grounds dates from c. 1670–1675 and was made in oil on canvas; the original measures 55.5 × 62 cm.
What size works above a sofa or bed?
For a standard three-seat sofa or a queen bed, 24×36 inches reads as a single statement piece; 16×24 suits a narrower wall or a pairing. The print's proportions follow the original, so a landscape-format painting is wider than it is tall.
