A ferry boat packed with passengers, umbrellas and baggage crosses choppy blue water toward us, while a man on the landing stage at the left leans down to rinse a cloth. In the distance the long Ryōgoku Bridge stretches across the river, and Mount Fuji appears as a dark silhouette against the evening sky. The print belongs to Hokusai's Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published around 1830–1832 by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudō). The view looks from the Onmaya embankment on the Sumida River, where a ferry crossed near the bridge. The darkened sky and the shadowy mountain capture the moment just after sunset; impressions vary in colour and condition.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
Deep blue water and a grey evening sky with a dark Fuji, for a study, living room or hallway at 36×24 in natural wood. It pairs with Hiroshige's Ryōgoku Bridge and the Great Riverbank, a view of the same bridge.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
