Kaaterskill Clove in the eastern Catskills, spelled Kauterskill in Gifford's day, seen from a height in a wash of hazy golden sunlight that fills the gorge and softens every edge; the double cascade of Kaaterskill Falls shows in the distance, and a hunter and his dog, almost camouflaged against the russet cliffside at lower left, climb towards the precipice. Gifford painted it in 1862, in the middle of the Civil War. Where Thomas Cole and others had made the glacier-carved ravine a scene of fearsome grandeur, Gifford turned it into an atmosphere, the air itself the subject, and he left out all trace of the hotels and tourists that crowded the clove by then. The painting is a landmark of what later came to be called luminism. It came to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1914 with the Jesup bequest.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.
