A girl with lowered eyes and a pale yellow face looks down beneath an enormous hat of green, pink and orange flowers, her shoulders draped in a cloth patterned with pink, green and white dots, all set against a hot red-orange background brushed in quick strokes. A strong black contour runs round the face, hat and shoulders. Jawlensky painted it on cardboard in 1910 in Munich, one of the richly coloured portraits of young women he made in the years around the founding of the New Artists' Association. The decorative patterning and flattened space recall Russian icons and popular woodcuts as much as French painting, a mix that was central to his work. It is in the Albertina in Vienna.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
