Rows of houses with pointed roofs and small windows step up the sheet in bands of crimson, plum, rose and cream, and among them stand roses drawn as spirals on thin green stems, as if a garden and a hillside town had grown into one another. The colour runs from deep wine red at the edges to pale pink in the middle. Klee made it in 1920 in oil and pen on paper, the year he was invited to teach at the Bauhaus. It belongs to a group of pictures from around 1919 and 1920 in which he combined drawn signs, such as flowers, arrows and letters, with fields of layered colour. The work is in the Lenbachhaus in Munich, home of the city's Blue Rider collection; Klee had shown with the Blue Rider artists before the war.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
