Two great vortices collide across a wide canvas: at left a branching, flame-like mass of bright red, at right a compact, rolling form of dark blue-black, with streaks of yellow, white and green whipping around them. No animals or landscape remain, only colour and movement, the red seeming to advance while the blue recoils. Marc painted it in 1914, months before the war began, and it is among his most abstract and last works; his widow Maria Marc described it as unfinished, although he had signed it. In his colour symbolism red stood for heavy, violent matter and blue for the spiritual, and the picture has often been read as a struggle between them, or as a premonition of the war in which he was killed two years later. It is in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×16. Prints at 18×12, 24×16 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
