At upper left a blue mountain topped with a walled town rises above a three-horse sledge, the Russian troika, racing across the picture, while to the right a green hill holds figures outlined in black beside trees in pink blossom; beneath, waves of blue, white and red roll across the bottom. Bands of pink and orange arc like rainbows through a yellow sky. Kandinsky dated the work 18 January 1911 and painted it on cardboard, adding a frame he painted himself. The troika, a motif from Russian folk imagery, recurs in his pictures of 1911 to 1913, where it is gradually reduced to the black arch of Picture with a Black Arch. The Chicago collector Arthur Jerome Eddy owned the painting by 1920, and his widow and son gave it to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1931.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 32×24. Prints at 16×12, 24×18, 32×24 in — 16×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×18 above a console or sideboard; 32×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
