A pale yellow-white dog lies curled asleep on a field of snow, its head resting on its forepaws, its body modelled in soft yellows and greens with a blue collar, while patches of blue shadow and a fringe of green fir trees frame it. The snow is painted in broad, creamy strokes, and the yellow of the animal glows against the cool blues. The dog is generally identified as Russi, Marc's own white Siberian sheepdog, who appears in several of his pictures. Marc painted it around 1911 in Sindelsdorf, the Upper Bavarian village where he had settled the year before, as he was developing his symbolic use of colour, in which yellow stood for gentleness. It is one of his quietest animal pictures, the creature wholly at peace in its surroundings. The painting is in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 36×24. Prints at 18×12, 24×16, 36×24 in — 18×12 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 24×16 above a console or sideboard; 36×24 as the statement piece above a sofa or headboard.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
