A single magpie perched on a wattle gate in a field of fresh snow near Étretat, painted on the spot during the winter of 1868–69. Monet had taken a house there with Camille and their newborn son, and with the snow he set himself the challenge Courbet had recently taken up with such success. His answer was quieter: the shadows are blue and lilac rather than black, the sunlit snow is built from pale, luminous tones, and the tiny black bird gives the whole expanse its scale, like a note on a musical stave. It is the largest of his roughly 140 snow scenes, and one of the first paintings in which the coloured shadow that became an Impressionist hallmark appears. The jury of the 1869 Salon rejected it. The painting stayed in private hands until the Musée d'Orsay bought it in 1984.
