Overlapping planes in black, deep red, olive green, ochre-brown and white are stacked at angles across a tall canvas, some flat and solid, others shading softly into one another, so that they seem to tilt in and out of space. The paint is thick, and the white ground is rough and scumbled. Lyubov Popova made it in Moscow in 1918, late in her Painterly Architectonics series, begun in 1916, in which she built compositions from interlocking coloured planes; the series owes much to Malevich's Suprematism but is heavier, more textured and more concerned with construction than with weightless space. She had studied in Paris in 1912–13 and taken part in the radical Russian exhibitions of 1915 and 1916. After the Revolution she turned to textile, stage and graphic design, and she died of scarlet fever in 1924. The painting is in the Dallas Museum of Art.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
