A square canvas is turned on its corner to hang as a diamond, and within it black lines divide the surface into a yellow triangle at upper left, a black rectangle below it, a blue triangle at the right edge, a small red corner near the bottom and wide planes of white and pale grey. Because the edges are diagonal, every horizontal and vertical line is cut off at a slant, which makes the grid seem to run on beyond the frame. Mondrian painted it in Paris in 1921, and it is among the first lozenge compositions in which he used his new vocabulary of primary colours and black lines. It was consigned to Léonce Rosenberg's Paris gallery, L'Effort Moderne, then passed through Dutch and American collections before Edgar Kaufmann Jr. gave it to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1957.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — natural wood flatters the lighter palette; black sharpens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
