A young man with long fair hair and a black beret turns over his shoulder to look out, one hand at his chest, his blue sleeve catching the light against a deep green ground. The sitter is Bindo Altoviti, a wealthy banker born in Rome in 1491 to a Florentine family and a notable patron of the arts, and Raphael painted him in Rome around 1515. The soft, half-turned pose and strong fall of light and shadow are unusual among Raphael's portraits of men and are often linked to his study of Leonardo. The panel stayed with Altoviti's descendants until 1808, when it was sold to Ludwig I of Bavaria. It hung in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich until 1936, after a long debate over its attribution, when it was sold abroad; Samuel H. Kress acquired it and it passed to the National Gallery of Art in Washington. A bronze bust of Altoviti by Benvenuto Cellini is in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
