The Virgin, in a red dress and a blue mantle edged with gold, sits in a grassy meadow with the Christ Child and the infant John the Baptist, the three arranged in a pyramid as Jesus reaches for John's small reed cross; a lake and a hill town lie behind them, and a red poppy alludes to the Passion. Raphael painted it in Florence in 1505 or 1506, aged about twenty-three, for the Florentine patrician Taddeo Taddei; the date is worked into the hem of the Virgin's neckline. The pyramidal grouping reflects his study of Leonardo, who was in Florence at the same time, and a red-chalk study for the picture is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Archduke Ferdinand Karl of Austria acquired it in 1662, it was recorded at Ambras Castle the following year, and in 1773 it came to Vienna, where its long stay in the Belvedere gave it a second name, Madonna del Belvedere. It hangs in the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
This full-bleed edition prints the work edge to edge from a high-resolution scan of the original, very slightly cropped (a few percent at most) to fit the sheet. The gallery edition shows the whole work, uncropped. The original is in the public domain.
