The picture is in two parts: above, Christ rises in white light over Mount Tabor between Moses and Elijah while Peter, James and John fall dazzled to the ground; below, in shadow, the other apostles fail to heal a boy possessed by a demon, whose family press forward pointing upwards. Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, the future Pope Clement VII, commissioned it in about 1516–1517 as an altarpiece for Narbonne Cathedral, at the same time ordering a Raising of Lazarus from Sebastiano del Piombo with drawings by Michelangelo, a contest between rival approaches to painting. It was the last painting Raphael worked on before his death in April 1520; a cleaning in 1972–1976 showed that assistants finished only some of the lower figures. The cardinal kept it in Rome and installed it in San Pietro in Montorio in 1523. French troops took it to Paris in 1797, and it returned in 1815. It hangs in the Pinacoteca Vaticana.
This print reproduces the whole work, uncropped, from a high-resolution scan of the original. The original is in the public domain.

Size. We'd hang this one at 24×36. Prints at 12×18, 16×24, 24×36 in — 12×18 for a shelf, desk or a gallery-wall grid; 16×24 above a desk, console or in a hallway; 24×36 as the statement piece above a sofa or bed.
Framing. The gallery ground is part of the print, so frame it without a mat — black suits the deep tones of this period; natural wood lightens it.
Pairing. Pairs as a set of three with other famous painting prints (10% off three or more).
