Blue irises, white peonies, tulips, carnations, violets and a scarlet poppy crowd a terracotta urn carved with playful cupids, set on the corner of a veined marble ledge where a bird's nest with pale blue eggs teeters at the edge. Three butterflies rest among the blooms, and the whole arrangement is lit from the upper left against a streaked ochre ground. Jan van Huysum signed it on the face of the ledge, Jan Van Huysum fecit, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington dates it to about 1720 to 1722, the years of his most ambitious bouquets. Like Jan Davidsz de Heem before him, he combined flowers that never bloom together and added insects to enliven the scene, each one painted from a separate study. The light palette and loose, swirling rhythm of the stems mark the shift from the dark Golden Age still life to the airy manner of the eighteenth century.
