Overripe fruit spills across a stone ledge, bursting grapes, peaches and plums, some already visited by insects, with flowers drooping under the weight of their blooms above. Jan van Huysum painted it on panel in 1722, and the Getty considers it the likely companion to its Vase of Flowers of the same year; the pair have travelled together through the collections of Lucretia Johanna van Winter in Amsterdam and Alfred de Rothschild in London to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, which bought them in 1982. The translucence of the grapes, the crisp leaves and the wiry tendrils of the vine show the technique that made him the most sought-after still-life painter of the eighteenth century: a laborious build-up of glazes whose secrets he refused to share, allowing no visitors into his studio. It marries seventeenth-century Dutch realism with the bright, decorative colour of his own age.
