- The Months (Seasons)
Three hunters and their lean dogs trudge home over a snowy ridge with a single fox to show for the day, and below them a whole valley opens out: frozen ponds crowded with skaters, a village, a water mill and jagged mountains under a green-grey sky. Bruegel painted it in 1565 as one of a series of six panels showing the months, commissioned by the Antwerp merchant Nicolaes Jonghelinck; five survive and this represents December and January. The alpine peaks are invented, remembered from his journey to Italy, and set behind a Flemish landscape. It is among the earliest paintings to treat winter as a subject in its own right. The panel is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna with two others from the set.
This exhibition-poster edition shows the whole work beneath original typography set in-house. The original is in the public domain.
Where it works
A valley full of small skaters rewards close looking, so hang it where people linger: a dining room, kitchen wall or study at 16×24 or 24×36. A black frame on a warm wall against the green-grey sky; it reads as a winter piece year-round.
